If you're a "Top Gun" type and expect your phone to have the power of a jet engine, then you're exactly who Sony had in mind with the Xperia X Good Absolutely brimming with power, the Sony Xperia X Performance is well designed and the only new Xperia to be waterproof. The Bad Battery life needs a big boost for this phone to live up to its potential. The Bottom Line The Xperia X Performance runs rings around the basic Xperia X and is a great phone for anyone who likes their handsets with a bit of grunt. The X Performance never to be called the XP, I'm told by Sony is the turbo-charged version of the Xperia X. Sony has packed more processing power into the Performance, along with speedier LTE 4G connectivity and a slightly bigger battery. Other than that, the two phones are almost identical, from the 5-inch full HD screen to the 23-megapixel camera on the rear. But trust me, the differences are very noticeable. At $699 or AU$999, it's less expensive than I'd anticipated. There are no pricing or launch details for the UK, but the price converts to around £525. With the basic X model costing $549, AU$799 or £450, that's not much of a price hike at I first saw the phone, I confess to finding the smooth, rounded edges and matte back a little pedestrian. But my opinion changed significantly while using it. It's comfortable to hold, and when I went back to compare it with the Z5 and Z5 Premium I found it to be the best looker of the group. My colleague Jessica Dolcourt called the Xperia X a "great one-handed phone" and the same goes for the Performance. Where she and I disagree is on screen size A 5-inch screen is perfect for her dainty fingers. My hands are about twice as big, and 5-inch phones make me feel like I'm using a Fisher Price "My First Phone" toy. But 5-inches is what's on offer here and I happily admit that's a good size for 80 percent of the the word Performance in the name, I had some high expectations for this phone and it didn't disappoint. The Qualcomm Snapdragon 820 quad-core 64-bit processor is a big jump up from the X and the numbers prove it. It far outstrips the Xperia X and actually rivals the Samsung Galaxy Xperia X Performance benchmark scores Sony Xperia X Performance 2,328 5,448 29,398Sony Xperia X 1,418 3,714 17586Samsung Galaxy S7 2,323 5,429 29,031 Geekbench 3 Single-Core Geekbench 3 Multi-Core 3DMark Ice Storm Unlimited Note Longer bars indicate better performance The phone feels exceptionally slick and fast. Apps open rapidly and navigating is smooth as silk. This speed even transfers over to the fingerprint sensor. Built into the power button like previous Xperia models, this is the most reliable and quick biometric security I've ever used on a phone. If you're in the US, however, you'll just have to take my word for it, because Sony has disabled the fingerprint scanner for your X Performance is also the only of the new X range to be water and dust proof. It's rated IP65/68, which means you can not only splash the thing, you could leave it under a metre of water for 30 minutes you know, if you desperately wanted to.The smartphone is a Category 9 LTE device, so on the right network you get a theoretical top download speed of 450Mbps. Wandering around Sydney's CBD, I saw average download speeds of 70-80Mbps and upload speeds of around 30-40Mbps. Or at least I did after I fixed some settings. The Performance defaulted to not connecting to 4G, which confused me until I was able to make the appropriate setting LifeIf there's one element of the Performance that doesn't impress, it's the battery life. Scoring on average just over 10 hours in our tests, it felt equally disappointing in real-world use. While trying the camera out at lunchtime, I could practically see the percentage on the 2,700mAh battery ticking down like a time understand that the big processor and faster 4G will eat some battery life, but for a small-ish phone with by today's standards a pretty low-resolution screen, it's a crying shame. The only saving grace is the Qnovo charging technology, which promises hours of battery life from a 10 minutes charge, but I'd prefer a bigger camera is the exact same excellent 23-megapixel snapper that's on the Xperia X. You can read that review for more details, but suffice to say that the rear camera takes some crisp shots if occasionally slightly overexposed and is very good in low-light dedicated camera button is a standout feature, opening up the camera even from a fully locked screen in under two seconds. The inside of Sydney's iconic State Theatre was extremely dark, but the default camera mode got a very clear low light shot. Nic Healey/CNET A bleak and cold Sydney day caused a slightly washed out look to the photos of the Hyde Park Fountain. Nic Healey/CNETFor the user who prizes power over pretty looks, it's hard to go past the Sony Xperia X Performance. The design might be sedate, but it's comfortable to use and the experience is akin to driving a high-powered car - and that goes for the fuel economy too. A better battery life would push this into a new category of excellent, but even without that I can recommend the X Performance, at least for Australia and the UK. My American cousins might need to have a think about how essential a fingerprint scanner is before committing their dollars. Fortunately, it hits the US market at roughly the same time as other countries, a welcome change from Sony's past releases. Unfortunately, it's priced too high $ for what you get. Despite solid performance and a good camera, the Xperia X can't hold its own against high-end offerings from HTC, LG, and Samsung, and is too costly compared with the many high-quality affordable phones we've been seeing, like the OnePlus 3. You're better off spending a bit more if you crave top-end performance, or a bit less if you're happy with a phone that's not on the cutting edge. Design, Features, and DisplayThe Xperia X will look familiar to anyone who's seen the Z5 Compact. It has the same overall design, but is larger by by HWD and heavier ounces. It's not as big and heavy as the metal-clad HTC 10 by by inches; ounces, and about on par with the Samsung Galaxy S7 by by inches; ounces. One-handed use is easy, but that's not a huge concern now that manufacturers have started moving away from hand-busting phablet flagships. There's a strip of aluminum around the middle of the phone along with rounded, easy-to-grip sides. The front is glass while the back is metal. Our review unit was matte black, but the phone can also be had in white, lime gold, or rose gold. It's very much standard Sony style at this point, but there's one important thing keep in mind The Xperia X is not waterproof, unlike many previous Xperia phones, so you'll want to keep it from getting wet. Similar Products On the right side there's a power button which lacks a fingerprint scanner on the US model, a volume rocker, and a Camera Shutter button. The left side has a flap that gives you access to the SIM and microSD card slots, the latter of which handled a 200GB SanDisk card $ at AmazonOpens in a new window without issue. The bottom has a micro USB charging port and the top has a audio jack. There's a 5-inch, 1,920-by-1,080-pixel display on the front, with a thin, almost non-existent bezel on the side. Despite the resolution not being as high as the Quad HD panel on the HTC 10, the pixel density still works out to a sharp 443 pixels per inches ppi, which is denser than the Huawei Honor 5X 401ppi. The screen is bright, with rich colors and good viewing angles. The panel becomes reflective outdoors, but is still usable when you kick the brightness up to the max. Network Performance and ConnectivityThe Xperia X is sold unlocked and supports LTE bands 1/2/3/4/5/7/8/12/17/19/20/26/28/38/39/40/41. It'll work on any GSM carrier, and bands 12 and 17 extend LTE range and building penetration on T-Mobile and AT&T, respectively. I tested it on T-Mobile in midtown Manhattan and received solid network performance in most areas. Outdoors the phone registered down and up. Indoor speeds dropped to single digits. The phone also supports dual-band Wi-Fi, NFC, and Bluetooth Call quality is good, though transmissions have a somewhat robotic edge. Earpiece volume is loud and noise cancellation effective at keeping outgoing calls mostly free from background noise. Performance and BatteryThe phone is powered by a midrange Snapdragon 650 processor. It performs well enough, scoring 77,126 in the AnTuTu benchmark, which tests overall system performance. It's far more capable than the Snapdragon 616-powered Huawei Honor 5X 35,200, but not nearly as strong as the Galaxy S7, which uses the cutting-edge Snapdragon 820 123,993. Still, with 3GB of RAM, the Xperia X faces no problem with multitasking and can handle high-end games like Asphalt 8 and Grand Theft Auto San Andreas without a hint of slowdown. Battery life is decent, though not spectacular for the screen size. The Xperia X clocked 4 hours and 58 minutes when we set screen brightness to maximum and streamed full-screen video over LTE. That's over an hour short of the HTC 10 6 hours, 4 minutes, and slightly less than the Honor 5X 5 hours, 16 minutes. I found it difficult to identify any advantage from the adaptive charging technology Sony has integrated to boost battery life. The technology—made by QnovoOpens in a new window—should allow for two full days of use between charges, a longer battery lifespan, and faster charging. The Xperia X does charge fast, up to 60 percent in 30 minutes when using the included adapter, but it certainly doesn't last the promised two days. By sunset, my battery life was usually hovering between 20 to 30 percent with average use. CameraCamera performance is generally strong. The 23-megapixel rear-facing camera takes excellent daylight shots, capturing clear, crisp images. Pictures of moving crowds and traffic in midtown Manhattan came out almost entirely free from blur or noise, which is rare when trying to capture motion. The 13-megapixel front-facing camera is similarly sharp, though auto exposure sometimes requires a few seconds to adjust to lighting conditions. See How We Test Cell Phones Video records in 1080p at a smooth, stable 60fps. I was even able to record while walking without significant shakiness, which may be a testament to Sony's Predictive Hybrid Autofocus, which helps keep a moving object in focus by predicting where it will move. Performance indoors isn't as good. There's some grain and noise in low-light shots, which is to be expected. Color reproduction is the bigger issue. In test shots taken in the PC Labs photo studio, the white background looks slightly pink, which is the same problem I encountered with the Z5 Compact. Fortunately, the Xperia X has manual controls, so you can adjust white balance, shutter speed, and exposure. It certainly outpaces the Honor 5X's camera performance, but it's no match for a higher-end phone like the Galaxy S7, especially when it comes to low-light shooting. Software and ConclusionsThe Xperia X comes running Android Marshmallow. Sony isn't necessarily the first manufacturer to roll out new updates, but it is one of the most reliable, usually updating its entire lineup, so it's a good bet the Xperia X will get Android N. That said, you'll find a fair number of UI changes. The lock screen, app icons, and settings menu are all altered from what you'll find on stock Android. There's also a What's New widget, which shows you new games, apps, and media, as well as a custom Weather widget, and a Smart Cleaner that removes temporary files to free up memory. There's little in the way of bloatware. Since the phone comes unlocked, you'll mainly find stock apps and custom Sony apps like PlayStation, Lifelog, and Xperia Lounge. There are a few additional apps like Amazon Shopping, AVG Protection, Facebook, Movie Creator, Spotify, Sketch, and TrackID, but all of them can be uninstalled, even the stock apps. Even so, you only get of free available storage out of the 32GB total, which is disappointing. But there is a microSD slot, so you can add storage if needed. The Sony Xperia X is a capable midrange phone with a good camera, but that shouldn't add up to a $550 price tag. It lacks waterproofing, which has distinguished the Xperia line for so long. And it can't compete with higher-end phones like the HTC 10 or the Galaxy S7 in terms of display quality, camera, or performance. Ultimately, you're better off saving $150 and picking up the OnePlus 3, which gets you a faster processor and much longer battery life. The Blu Life One X, meanwhile, isn't quite as powerful, but offers terrific value for the price. Pros Solid performance. Good camera. Expandable storage. Most bloatware, including stock apps, can be uninstalled. View More Cons Relatively expensive. Average specs. Not waterproof. The Bottom Line The Sony Xperia X is an unlocked Android phone with good overall performance, but it's priced too high for what you get. Like What You're Reading?
